Art Wars, Episode 6: Norman Mailer vs. Gore Vidal

by Articulate

When the creators of beautiful work fight, things can get ugly. Enter Art Wars, the show where we explore history’s greatest artistic rivalries.

Writer Gore Vidal was renowned for his many squabbles and verbal jousts, almost as much as his critically acclaimed novels and essays. But of all his feuds, the most memorable was with fellow author Norman Mailer.

What began with (what else?) a bad review escalated into violence on more than one occasion. And though the two men eventually made nice, their bitter rivalry certainly has us rethinking that whole “sticks and stones” thing.
