Christian Scott, Live at SOUTH

For New Orleans native Christian Scott aTunde Adjuah (a.k.a. Christian Scott), music isn’t just a form of expression—it’s a way to bring together people of different racial, ethnic, and cultural backgrounds.
When he’s writing and playing trumpet with his band, Scott takes this responsibility very seriously. “In what we do, we try to sort of obliterate this notion, or this idea of genre,” he explains. “In favor of creating musical realities that illuminate the sameness between seemingly disparate cultures of music, as opposed to just looking for the topical differences.”
Though most of his songs fit comfortably in the jazz vernacular, Scott himself prefers the term “stretch music,” so named for the way it bridges the gap between diverse musical styles.
